Do you remember The Jetsons? It was well devised animated series about how our future homes and cities would be. The dream of a smart home is not a dream anymore. Our world has been moving pretty fast and penetration of internet is getting deeper into our lives. Thus, being connected to everyone is not just a swank but has become need of the day. We are connected to our friends, our bank accounts, even to our work sometimes (making presentations on the go & talking to clients), so why not we be connected to our homes?

To be connected with your home, there should be equipments and devices at your home which are linked to a PLC (programmable logic controller) or a Hub. The PLC or Hub, not only control those devices but it also connects with internet, enabling you to operate the equipments and devices at your home even from a remote location using a mobile app or computer. A smart home is one that integrates with your daily schedule and transforms your life.

Need of Smart Home

Saving energy and security of home are the basic ideas behind a smart home, other than providing us a much more comfortable lifestyle.

  • Energy  – has been one the most scarce resource, it is very important to conserve it. A smart home is a leap in that direction. It not just detects when a device is not needed and switches it off but also gives you equipment wise analysis of energy consumption to make better decisions. This may become very crucial towards solving the problem of Global Warming.
  • Security – of home has always been a case of concern. Devices like CCTV and emergency alarms are already seen and used. The next generation of security based devices include biometric devices, automatic locks and remote access based security system. This would take a leap in ensuring safety of your home all round the clock. All these devices can be accessed by a mobile app.
  • Comfort & luxury – Homes which are backed by smart devices, adds luxury, comfort and style to your living. Everything in the home can controlled by a centralised system, which you can operate either through voice-activation or your smartphone. Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) has already become most adopted automation technology. The lights that change the color as per your mood and binds that flips if there is too much sunlight, soon smart homes will understand you and your habits to automate all the devices accordingly.
  • Entertainment and fun – The music that would turn on as you enter, automated woofer systems and OLEDs shall make your home into the premium entertainment hub. Such automation in these devices will be provide you the most entertaining experience.
  • Health – Sensor based health monitors or wearable can help in early detection of many problems. Such systems can be very useful in monitoring infants and elderly persons who need constant supervision by a nurse or a live-in help.

As smart homes gets hyped on major scale, home automation ideas will take on a whole new dimension. Connectivity through codes creates both opportunities and risks – particularly in terms of safety and privacy. But then, it has always been a concern when a new technology is introduced for our assistance and comfort.
