It was this day in the year 1776 when the USA officially adopted the Declaration of Independence signed by the members of Continental Congress. Thirteen independent colonies formed an alliance and separated out from the British Empire to form an independent nation.

The Declaration is considered a statement of vision through which the Constitution of the United States has been interpreted. Though it is the Constitution that provides the legal and governmental framework for the United States, the Declaration, with its eloquent assertion – “all men are created equal,” is equally beloved by the people of America.

The day often marks off with political speeches, parades and various traditional ceremonies, followed by celebrations, social gatherings and merry making throughout the country. Picnics and the outings fill the day while fireworks fill the night sky. Friends and families barbeque, hold contests and races, wave flags, sing, or listen to patriotic songs.
