VIEWSSocial Networking has been a feeble spot for Google ever since it lost out the battle against Facebook with its early acquired service Orkut. It started to gain the market share with its Google Buzz and Google Plus but it remained deprived due to the sheen of Twitter and Facebook over the social network space. But now Google is trying to tap another area that is gaining momentum – group messaging service, with its new product Google Spaces.
Google Spaces is a messaging app which aims to provide a clean conversation view for a dedicated group of friends, co-workers, collaborators or family. The basic premise is the particular group will have something common topic to discuss and chat for. You can share photos, videos, and text in the group conversation.
Isn’t these features already available in all the other messaging application we use in our day to day lives? There are plenty of highly popular mobile apps in this segment like WhatsApp, Hike, Wechat, etc. Then what is so different about this Google Spaces?
The best part of Spaces is an in-app integration of features like YouTube, Google Search, and Chrome which make it easy for the user to find and view the photos and videos without switching to the other apps.
It is thoughtfully developed to do things that are not in easily done with all the other apps. Another feature that makes it apart from another group messaging apps is being able to access it on your computer without any code, barcode or desktop app. Simply open the browser and login with your google account.
Yes, we know that it is tough to understand what Google is planning to do in this segment. The new improved Hangouts was supposed to fulfil all these functions over its mobile app and browser application. But sadly it seems it is the end of Hangouts too.
This social networking that has been a huge revenue driver for many of the mobile and web products. The more the number of people connected to it, the more are the data you have to understand the psyche of the human conversation and thus targeting the needs of users.
All this is enough for Google to venture again and again in this is a segment which has till now proven to be unlucky for it. We can only hope that Google Spaces get some hold for the Mountain View tech giant in this zone but the road ahead looks hard and the social network dominants, facebook and twitter are leaving no stone unturned to maintain their dominance.
