After acquiring Nest Labs Inc. in 2014, Google had made it clear to its rivals that will surely be making its mark in the Home Automation sector. It later released Thread which is an IPv6 based IoT protocol for household device to communicate on a network. Now, with its OpenThread, an open source implementation of the Thread, it has ensured to be the elite in the field of home automation.
OpenThread is surely going to accelerate the deployment of Thread in the devices for smart home. It is an act seen as many to establish Thread as one of the key networking technology standards for products meant to be used in the connected home. read as one of the key networking technology standards for connected products in the home.
What is Thread ?
Thread being an IPv6 networking protocol built on open standards which can run 802.15.4 wireless devices, will be a standard protocol soon. Other tech giants that have joined hands with Nest in this standard protocol Thread are – ARM, Atmel, Dialog Semiconductor, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments.
A source claimed that with all this Nest which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet is also working on something that is close to Amazon’s Echo. It is believed that such an addition to Nest’s home automation products like Thermostats and Nestcam will bring together a number of other IoT based devices and services which will help in better managing homes.
Surviving the Competition
The basic idea behind OpenThread is to get more and more connected products to adopt Thread and improve the interoperability between products. Google is trying to get more silicon partners to join this Thread movement and developing such chips that will push the dominance of Nest in this zone.
OpenThread is a vision towards making Nest much developers and users favourite just like Android. This will lead to more hardware and software developers to build effective products that can work in Nest based ecosystem. This is in sync with Google policies because it knows very well how to use the open source platforms and generate revenues.
The Open Source for Developers
The early version of OpenThread by Nest can be accessed at GitHub. Nest has given opportunity to its developers for OpenThread to submit Pull Requests. The developers on GitHub are given the access to sample code, with the ability to file issues on GitHub, and developers support on Stack Overflow as well as Nest’s own community discussion forum.
Nest has also updated that it will be giving a demo of OpenThread at the upcoming Google I/O which is scheduled from May 18th to May 20th 2016 in its Sandbox. We are waiting to hear it from our team that has gone to get us the latest tech updates from Mountain View, California.
