VIEWSAcer, a Taiwan based PC maker had announced a conference in Shanghai this Thursday to unveil its CloudMobile A800, but the event was cancelled on account of Google’s opposition to it.
Google raised its objection as Acer phone was using rival mobile Operating system. Acer teamed up the China based Alibaba Group Holding Ltd to use its operating system Aliyun. Aliyun is Alibaba’s first self-developed mobile operating system which it says it took 3 whole years and a workforce of about 1600 people to develop it.
Well, apparently, Google is red hot as it thinks that Aliyun is incompatible to its android ecosystem. Meaning Alibaba took the Android apps and made changes to it to create Aliyun. But wait wasn’t Android a part of open source consortium?
Let me now give you an introduction on Aliyun which might help you understand the Google Android ecosystem scenario.
Now Aliyun is a Linux based operating system which although derived from android, is incompatible to its other versions. Aliyun is however Android binary-compatible which means that it can run all the android apps. So let me get this straight – is Aliyun playing it safe by maintaining it’s so called individual identity whilst leveraging on the very profiting android apps market? Well, that’s for Aliyun to say.
But Google has some pretty stern reasons for Acer. As Aliyun is not part of the Android ecosystem, it may affect the market adversely in case of bad use experience.
It says “Acer has committed to building one Android platform and to not ship non-compatible Android devices. Compatibility is at the heart of the Android ecosystem for Android Apps and ensures a consistent experience for developers, manufacturers and consumers. Non-compatible versions of Android, like Aliyun, weaken the ecosystem.”
“Will someone please ask Google to Define Android?” Futher he added “Aliyun OS is not part of the Android ecosystem so of course Aliyun OS is not and does not have to be compatible with Android. It is ironic that a company that talks freely about openness is espousing a closed ecosystem.” – John Spelich, VP, Alibaba.
Alibaba Group’s chief strategy officer Zeng Ming’s quote: ‘We want to be the Android of China’.
It is undeniable that android is the top most operating system for smart phones. It is the major revenue earner as well as an apt platform to promote Google’s other major services such as Google maps. Google’s little altercation is to safeguard its market.
Seems Alibaba and its “chalis chor” (its team) will have to put down its foot if it wants Aliyun to survive.
